TCM for Women's Health in Bangkok: Menstrual, Hormonal & Menopause Support
Women's health encompasses a broad range of concerns — from menstrual irregularity and hormonal fluctuations to perimenopause and beyond. At Chenming TCM Clinic in Bangkok's Chinatown, we offer personalised Traditional Chinese Medicine care that aims to support women's wellbeing at every stage of life. Our approach focuses on understanding each patient's individual pattern rather than applying a one-size-fits-all treatment.
Common Women's Health Concerns We See
The following concerns are among the most common reasons women visit Chenming TCM Clinic:
- Irregular menstrual cycles — cycles that are too long, too short, or unpredictable
- Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea) — cramping, lower back pain, or discomfort before or during menstruation
- Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) — mood changes, bloating, breast tenderness, or fatigue in the days before a period
- Hormonal imbalance — affecting energy, skin, weight, or emotional wellbeing
- Perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms — hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood changes
- General fatigue and low energy related to the menstrual cycle
These concerns often have complex underlying causes, and many women find that conventional approaches only partially address their needs. TCM offers a complementary perspective that may be used alongside conventional medical care.
The TCM Perspective on Women's Health
In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, women's health is deeply connected to the quality and flow of Blood, Qi, and the balance of Yin and Yang. The Liver, Spleen, and Kidney are considered the three organs most central to menstrual health in TCM theory:
- The Liver — In TCM, the Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi and Blood. Liver Qi Stagnation — often associated with stress, frustration, or emotional tension — is believed in TCM to be one of the most common patterns underlying menstrual irregularity and PMS.
- The Spleen — The Spleen is considered the source of Blood production in TCM. When Spleen Qi is weak, it may contribute to fatigue, heavy periods, or irregular cycles.
- The Kidneys — The Kidneys are said to govern reproductive health and are closely associated with hormonal balance in TCM theory. Kidney Yin deficiency, for example, is a pattern commonly associated with perimenopausal symptoms such as night sweats and hot flushes.
Understanding which pattern applies to each patient is central to personalised TCM care.
How Acupuncture May Support Menstrual Health
Acupuncture is one of the primary tools used at Chenming TCM for women's health concerns. According to TCM theory, acupuncture aims to:
- Move Liver Qi and Blood — addressing stagnation patterns that may contribute to cramping and irregular cycles, in TCM theory
- Nourish Kidney Yin — supporting the cooling, nourishing aspect of the body that may be depleted during perimenopause
- Strengthen Spleen Qi — supporting Blood production and overall energy
- Regulate the Chong and Ren meridians — these pathways are specifically associated with menstruation and reproduction in TCM theory
Many patients report noticing changes in cycle regularity or symptom severity after a series of acupuncture sessions, though individual responses vary and a course of treatment (typically 4–8 sessions) is usually recommended before assessing results.
Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women's Health
Chinese herbal medicine is often used alongside acupuncture for women's health concerns. In TCM practice, herbal formulas are prescribed based on the individual's specific pattern, not a generic condition label. Classic formulas used in TCM for centuries include those designed to:
- Nourish and move Blood for painful or irregular periods
- Calm the Liver and resolve Qi stagnation for PMS and mood-related concerns
- Supplement Kidney Yin and clear deficiency heat for perimenopausal symptoms
All herbal prescriptions at Chenming TCM are personalised and adjusted over time.
A Note on Fertility Support
Some women ask about TCM as a support for fertility. While TCM is not a fertility treatment and cannot replace specialist reproductive medical care, it has traditionally been used in China and is increasingly used in integrative settings as a complementary approach alongside conventional care. If you are undergoing fertility investigations or treatment, please consult with your specialist, and let us know so we can coordinate appropriately.
Moxibustion and Other Supportive Therapies
Moxibustion — the application of gentle heat using dried mugwort near specific acupuncture points — is traditionally used in TCM for conditions associated with Cold in the uterus, depleted Yang, or poor circulation. It may be recommended for women experiencing cold-type menstrual pain, fatigue, or certain perimenopausal patterns.
What to Expect at Chenming TCM Clinic
Your first appointment includes a detailed consultation covering your menstrual history, symptoms, lifestyle, stress levels, sleep, and digestion. Pulse and tongue diagnosis provide additional information to help identify your specific TCM pattern. A personalised treatment plan is then discussed, which may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, moxibustion, or a combination.
Treatment sessions typically last 30–45 minutes. For menstrual health concerns, it is often recommended to commit to at least 2–3 full menstrual cycles of treatment to allow for meaningful assessment of progress.
Our clinic is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–19:00. Consultations are available in English, Thai, and Chinese.
